The Origin of the TELESMA O(h)M Symbol

TELESMA O(h)M Symbol

We often get asked about the origin of our O(h)M symbol. This symbol represents the music of TELESMA by combining the ancient with the modern. It appears on our album covers, within our video projections and all aspects of our visual elements. Our symbol is the combination of the sacred OM and modern ohm symbols which can be seen below. The sacred OM symbol represents the vibration that created and sustains our universe, the sound of the Divine, without bounds, a beginning or an end. The ohm symbol comes from the measurement of  electrical resistance. This represents modern technology and science, and the ability to “sculpt” energy into sound and music. It is with the utmost respect that we use these two symbols to create a visual representation of our music.
The TELESMA O(h)M symbol was created in collaboration with TELESMA, Lisa Oberg, and by graphic artist Jeremy Opio, who has collaborated on our visual art for many years.
Pickup a CD, Tshirt, or sticker at any of our live shows and take home your own O(h)M symbol!

In 2008, Telesma presented the “Winter Solstice Gathering” at Sonar in Baltimore, featuring live painting by visionary artists Alex & Allyson Grey, EOTO, and more! The idea was to bring together live art and music (live and electronic) into a collaborative/interactive setting. This event helped re-spark a creative movement in the Baltimore music/art scene which has snowballed into many different communities, production teams, and artists collaborating to create limitless experiences for the community. We hope that you’ll join us to celebrate the winter solstice and our diverse artistic community!!
TELESMA (psychedelic tribal rock)
www.telesmaband.com
The Telesma experience is an ecstatic trans-cultural phenomenon with a highly infectious and danceable beat. Exploding on the Baltimore music scene in 2002, it soon developed a loyal local fan base and then shook the underground festival scene from coast to coast. Every Telesma show is a vortex of creativity; a celebration of body, mind and spirit.
Telesma’s vast arsenal of musical finery includes instruments as divergent as the didgeridoo, kubing (bamboo mouth harp from the Philippines), to electronic and tribal drums and the manDrum, one of the inventions of Telesma’s guitarist, as well as bass, keyboards, drum kit and the human voice.
Telesma’s sound has been sometimes described as “psychedelic tribal modern world dance music, “ with diverse sounds ranging from intense polyrhythmic rock to the trance-like pulses of modern electronic dance/groove music.
Second Self
www.secondself.net
An energetic power trio steeped in rock, reggae, and funk influences, Second Self lays highly original music that showcases the group’s ability to transition between tight arrangements and off-the-cuff improvisation.
In 2003, while attending high school in Fallston, Maryland, founding members Jimmy Hunter (lead guitar), Jeff Hunter (drums), and Nick Stampone (bass), began writing instrumental compositions. The three have collaborated with many great musicians since forming and continue to perform as a trio.
Second Self has performed over 200 live shows in such venues as The 8×10 Club in Baltimore, The 9:30 Club in Washington DC, and The Chameleon Club in Lancaster, PA. Known for high energy sets, Second Self leaves fans wanting more every time they play.
In 2010, Second Self released their self-titled debut album with Dave Thomas on vocals and rhythm guitar. Recorded at Wrightway Studios in Baltimore by engineer and producer Mike McAree. In 2011, the band recorded a 4 song “Winter EP” in their home studio, with Erik Dittmar on vocals and rhythm guitar.
Bow-Legged Gorilla
www.thebowleggedgorilla.com
The Bowlegged Gorilla, otherwise known as Kenny Johnston, is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist from Baltimore with an emphasis on mouth percussion and American fingerstyle guitar. He draws influence from traditional Turkish, Mongolian, African, and American music (primarily country finger style blues and ragtime), as well as experimental and electronic dance music.
For the Bowlegged Gorilla, a single song is a meditative experience, and through the process of creating his multilayerd sounds, he clears his mind. While he stubbornly refuses to incorporate any electronic effects or digital enhancements into his work, his music reflects a depth and layering that is mesmerizing to witness coming from a single being.
He has done beat-boxing workshop for kids, plays as a musical accompanist for dancers; and he has toured all over the country. In 2009, The Baltimore City Paper named him the “Best Solo Performer in Baltimore.”

Soohan (Club/Experimental/Electronic)
www.purevolume.com/soohan
For the past 5 years, SOOHAN has been filling up rooms across the DMV, mixing eclectic Baltimore club, hip-hop samples and deep bass-lines to create an undeniably dance-worthy set that combines elements of Top 40, tech and minimal house, glitch, funk, juke and dancehall. Cutting his teeth as a mashup producer in 2006, SOOHAN found fame through his edits and remixes of favorited artists like Three 6 Mafia, Biggie Smalls, and Missy Elliott, currently gaining over 200,000 plays and counting. He has shared the stage with heavy-hitters including Afroman, Mike Posner, Jack Beats, Alvin Risk, Downlink, Minnesota, Papadosio and EOTO.
Galaxy Dynamite (Surf/Trance/Rock/Psychedelic)
www.galaxydynamite.com
Hailing from Norfolk, Virginia, Galaxy Dynamite has been delivering their larger-than-life signature blend of furious, frenetic, and absolutely relentless heavy bass rock across the East Coast since 2010. This power trio has already made a name for themselves creating seamlessly improvised dreamy soundscapes over hard-hitting passion driven psychedelic electro dance grooves. And with over 325 shows and festivals under their belts, alongside acts such as Ozric Tentacles, Conspirator, Paper Diamond and Papadosio, this is only the beginning…

TELESMA – Psychedelic Tribal Rock
www.telesmaband.com
Blending ancient and modern instrumentation and spirit, the Baltimore-based group Telesma bridges the gap between primal and futuristic. Setting themselves apart with their intoxicating sound and extraordinary live performances, they take the audience on a soul inspiring journey that transcends this world, tantalizes the senses, and moves the body with waves of pulsating rhythm.
Telesma’s unique sound, oft labeled “electro-acoustic psychedelic world dance music”, is driven by the ancient sound of the didgeridoo, the kubing (bamboo mouth harp), tribal drums and percussion, and the human voice.
“To experience Telesma live is to become part of the show. More than just music, it’s a swirling, whirling, twirling event…it’s extremely hard not to become involved in the swaying, hypnotic rhythms that pour forth from the stage.” Michael Macey of the Chesapeake Music Guide.
See-I – Reggae/Funk
www.see-i.com
The story begins with two brothers, Rootz and Zeebo, who found their way from college in North Carolina via the Caribbean only to end up in Washington, DC. It was in the cultural melting pot of the Nation’s capital that they developed their creative and musical talents. In the heady days of the late 1980s, the brothers Steele would launch the project that has defined their lives: See-I. They quickly became a fixture of DC’s burgeoning Reggae scene crossing paths with Reggae aficionado Eric Hilton who was determined to include them in his future projects. Hilton was opening the Eighteenth Street Lounge and associated record label, and brought Rootz and Zeebo on board. Throughout the 90’s and into the coming millennium they would go on to record, perform and tour with Thievery Corporation.
Then in 2005 Zeebo and Rootz started a regular Wednesday night gig at the Eighteenth Street Lounge that would see them coalescing one of the greatest live bands the city has ever seen. Slowly gathering momentum, guest musicians and members – from the Thievery Live band and the Chuck Brown band amongst others – the See-I live band would grow into a nationwide touring phenomenon, and are now considered one of America’s premier Reggae party bands.
See-I’s unique blend of classic roots reggae with a good blend of funk and soul has rocked dance floors from coast to coast. The deep experiences & influences of this 8-piece group have created a sound popular sound at ski resorts, beach towns & concert halls alike. Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation even said, “They’re unique musically and I think that’s why people gravitate to them so much”. See-I is original roots, rock reggae from the nation’s capital!
Deaf Scene – Experimental Instrumental Rock
www.deafscenemusic.com
Deaf Scene is an experimental band based in Baltimore, Maryland. As an instrumental drum-bass-guitar trio, the band pulls off an incredibly vast range of sounds, pushing the sonic boundaries of each instrument and effect that they use. In their four year existence, the band has cultivated a unique musical style, influenced by everything from The Beatles to Bassnectar and beyond; yet their music still defies any sort of traditional “jam-band”, “post-rock”, or “electronic” categorization. Onstage, Deaf Scene’s raw energy and eerie psychedelia draw you into their one-of-a-kind live performance. Lush guitar melodies, ethereal loops, intricate bass harmonies, and propulsive drum rhythms are the cornerstones of Deaf Scene’s music, both live and in the studio. In 2010, the band self-released their debut EP, a cohesive movement of music that showcases the powerful potential of Deaf Scene’s brand of loop-infused rock experimentation. With plans for releasing more music and touring extensively in 2012, Deaf Scene is truly proving to be, “One of Maryland’s best up-and-coming acts” -explodinginsound.com
Freedom Enterprise – Funk/Soul Groove
www.freedomenterprise.org
Freedom Enterprise is Baltimore’s own Funk Soul Rock and Roll. An amazing original, organic, orgasmic musical experience. With deep seeded roots in funk, blues, and jazz and a sharp eye towards the future, Freedom is ready to rattle the scene. Freedom Enterprise has forged their own unique sound and their place in town as one of Baltimore’s must see bands. FE is a conglomerate of many amazing musicians, each bringing their own sound, wibe, and history to the table. Freedom’s concerts are a melodic wall of sound that guarantees good times, an amazing musical experience, and a funky fun place to meet good people. Were planting seeds, were connecting people, were creating the vibe for you to come out and ride, and were constantly working on our art form to perfect for the people.
